Thanks to Lou Wicker at NSSL I have some IDL benchmarks for a 3 GHz Mac Pro.
You can see the details at http://idl.tamu.edu/mac_bench.php.

It looks like the Mac Pro is consistently about twice as fast as the 2.5 GHz
PowerMac G5.

I'm always happy to have the opportunity to make mistakes faster. :-)

Cheers, Ken

That even seems larger that the XP vs. Linux performance gap...
one really wonders why windows is so much faster?

Ciao,

Unfortunately I have to run windows XP under boot camp on my flash new
system until I can complete a particular project. Fortunately that
gives me an excellent excuse to burn time while I configure and
"assess" two systems in one...

The machine is only a 2.66 GHz Mac Pro, with 4x512MB = 2GB RAM. The
numbers I get are, FYI:

(IDL 6.3, x86 native for each OS)

time_test3:
OS X: 0.89
wxp: 0.55

JD's test:
OS X: 0.16 - 0.17
wxp: 0.17 - 0.18

Each test was run numerous times, ignoring the first instance. I'm too
tired and harried to eyeball a mean for JD's test so I give the range.
For what it's worth, XP is run off a seagate 7200.10 320GB sataII drive
in drive bay 3.

I wonder what the 3GHz running windows would do to time_test3?
