Hi Frank,
This sounds like a vnc rather than an IDL problem. Try starting your
vncserver with explicit options for colour, such as -depth 24
Also, try and display a true-colour image using XV or something like
that on your visual, if vnc's the culprit, you will see patches of
colour where there should be smooth transitions.
