Hi,
Does anyone know whether IDL will run under Ubuntu Linux? I thought I
ask before I go through the install process and get angry afterwards.
:-)

Cheers,
Haje

The download installer is what I used. It's crazy but downloading a
100MB file these days is a lot quicker than trying to find a CD in my
office. I know it's here somewhere... :-)

Hi!

I had the same problem twice. With Ubuntu 6.* thera are no problems,
but wth Ubuntu 5.* you need some extra libraries.
I put some information about this on my webpage:

Xavi

Running IDL 64-bit on Ubuntu AMD 64-bit on an Asus A6T notebook. No
problems. The CD installer didn't work for some reason (permission
issues, trouble getting the installer script to perform), but the
downloaded IDL package installed just fine.

Worked like a charm, no additional libraries needed.

Karl and Mike,
I'll give it a shot then. Should I have problems with the compatibility
libs, I may get back to you.

Thanks,
Haje

I had Breezy Badger running on my Dell laptop and Lenova Thinkpad. I
think there were a few packages I had to get (launch an iTool and it
will tell you what's missing).

IDL 6.3 works fine for me on my laptop running Ubuntu. I don't remember
if I had to install any compatibility libs or not. All I remember was
that it was pretty easy.

Speaking about "quick":

I am using an Asus A6T Turion 64 X2 notebook (not desktop) that cost me
2200 CHF (1770 USD) including 2 GB of RAM and 2 year on-site warranty,
and some nice test results to add to the Mac IDL Benchmark experience
are like this:

JD Test > 0.20
time_test3 > 0.98
