I knew that of all the windowing layers, etc., but since IDL doesn't
use Aqua or any of its fancy bells and whistles, it wasn't clear what
64bitness was required. Mathematica on OSX Tiger, for instance, has
been 64bit for a year and a half. Their separate compute server
probably helps with that.

Surprisingly OS X still isn't fully 64 bit capable. The core operating
system is, but the GUI and Visualization systems are still 32 bit. As
such, IDL has yet to be ported to 64 bit on OS X.
Apple has stated that the next version of the OS X (10.5) will be fully
64 bit.

Once Leopard is released, ITT can provide a 64 bit version of IDL.
