Hi David,
Salamanca is indeed a very nice city, but am afraid that your plan of
only speaking Spanish is hardly feasible, not because of the natives,
who actually hardly speak English (only young people do) all over
Spain, but because your fellow students, who depending on your level
will be prone to shift to English when the conversation gets difficult.
One more thing you have to take into account (probably you are aware
of, but just in case), is that Spain is a cold place in winter, with
minimum temperatures dropping frequently below zero C in every inland
city. Coastal cities would be an exception, but I dunno of any small
town along the coast where they offer Spanish courses in winter (you
can check anyways in http://www.aprendemas.com). If you like skiing
and tapas, consider my hometown Granada, is a lively and charming city
40 km away from the largest ski resort in Southern Europe, Sierra
Nevada. I will be teleworking from Malaga (am a postdoc in Calgary, and
have managed to convince my supervisor to skip the cold Canadian winter
:) during winter, so if you finally head to Spain, visit the south, and
wish a local guide for a day visit in Granada, just let me know.
Cheers
