I think you'll find that Encapsulated PostScript (EPS), whilst not perfect, is
probably the best format to export graphics from IDL in. Just about
all modern word processors I can think of import EPS files and although
the preview may not show-up on the screen your printed output should look
great. To use Encapsulated PostScript you need to do :

set_plot,'ps'
device,/encapsulated

For more information RTFM page 3-36 in the Reference Guide.
