Mike,

The problem it sounds like you are having (IDL bombing when you try to
access a file through a pull-down menu) is one the RSI people are aware of. In
fact, on the last page of the "IDL for Linux Installation Addendum", it states:

File-Open Crashes IDLTool on Linux 1.2.8

Using the "Open" option form IDLTool's File menu will cause IDL to crash on
Linux version 1.2.8. This is due to a bug in libc.a that causes the Motif
file selection dialog to crash. This bug should not affect users of a
different kernel or libc.a versions.

I quoted the addendum in full because it sounds as if you are working off the
demo version you pulled down from the net, not the CD-ROM with accompanying
documentation.
