An even faster solution for remote desktop operation is NX, in particular
FreeNX as the server and the free client from:
http://www.nomachine.com/
This provides an almost unreal level of X interactivity, even across slow,
high latency links, and you get your entire (server-side) desktop. Even
dial up can be used without horrific results. It really is amazing magic
voodoo.
