Dear Ben,
I've done a quick research into VM and indeed it seems to be a possible
solution, although I'm not sure whether you can feed it with files.
Nevertheless, I am working with a very old idl version (5.5) and can't
create .sav files that will be acknowledged in VM.
Thanks for the suggestion.

I can't help with your main question, but perhaps there is a different
route. Have you experimented with the virtual machine? I use this for
all my batch operations now, as it requires no license and can run on
pretty much anything if you write the code to interact with the
environment carefully.
cheers,
Ben
