64-bit without IDL_IDLBridge vs. 32-bit with IDL_IDLBridge [message #51968] Mon, 18 December 2006 14:24

I am trying to decide what version of IDL to buy (I had been using
6.1), and whilst reading through the documentation, I noticed that
IDL_IDLBridge is not supported in 64-bit Linux operating systems. I was
wondering if those of you more knowledgeable than I had any opinions
what is the best choice? I use IDL mostly for automated processing of
large sets of satellite data. When I ran 6.1 on Windows it was annoying
how my gui would freeze up while the data processing was ongoing (which
usually took more than a day to complete) so the IDL_IDLBridge feature
is very attractive. At the same time though, due to the large amounts
of data being analyzed, having 64-bit support for those large arrays
would be nice also.

I would greatly appreciate any thoughts. I am Linux noob and liked the
idea of 64-bit OS, but maybe I am expecting too much? I guess I could
get the 64-bit versions of Windows, but I'm trying to work on a budget.

Thanks in advance
