Sounds like your printer doesn't have enough memory to print the color image
which is undoubtedly larger in size than the BW image. It sounds like it may be
able to format some of it, but then runs out of memory. I don't know much about
the HP Deskjet, but my laserjet 4 had the same type of problem with printing
complex BW graphics until I increased the memory from 2M to 6M. Now
it works great.
