Hi,
Last week I made an interesting discovery. I attended the annual fall
meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco. This meeting is
probably the largest conference held in the US for the geophysical research
sector. The meeting is commonly well attended, reaching record participation
of 14000 people this year. In the past RSI (now ITTVIS) had an exhibition
both every year since I started attending the meeting in 1998. I enjoyed
stopping by their both for a chat about IDL features and other things. To my
great surprise ITTVIS did not find it necessary to be represented at this
years's event. This is surprising since I expect that a large number of
conference participants are ITTVIS customers. So I wonder what the reason
is? Is this sign of a change in the target group for the software? Or is our
field so saturated with IDL customers that further promotion of IDL/ENVI is
no longer necessary (chain reaction with a self-promoting effect)? Or do the
investments go into other sectors where there is much more money to be
earned (wonder what these might be :) )? After more than 15 years of using
and supporting IDL I feel abandoned. Please help me feel better....

I received one personal e-mail regarding this matter but nothing official
from ITTVIS marketing. I am still hoping for an offical ITTVIS post.
