...and interesting, I checked remember layout and restarted IDL. Then I
check "Specify layout" and restarted again and now it keeps remembering the
new layout. This is clearly a bug but in light of the Eclipse DE in the
make, this one may not get fixed anymore.

thanks so much, that did the trick. For years, I thought that this box
refers solely the IDLDE window size. You made my day. :)
