I am coding some really hairy equations from the gas transport theory
(one of the finer achievements of man, mind you). The equations are
full of Greek symbols, and I program in Emacs.

So, in emacs I created this simple test file, where I used Greek
character for variable. I was lucky, so I chose the gamma symbol. I
believe the file was saved using the unicode system, but I am really
not sure

The procedure compiled and ran successfully!

There are two problems:

IDL does not like all Greek characters. Some will not compile
IDL does not display Greek characters. Instead you get some
combinations of funky characters.

Isn't it frustrating (infuriating) that in 2007 we are still using the
same input methods and encodings that were used in 1950's?

For a brief moment, I thought I touched Nirvana. The moment is gone,
and back to ASCII and shoveling snow

(Penned down on February 25, 2007, in Albany, NY, ISA, with 2ft of
fresh powder snow).
