I'm trying to add new columns to a binary table inside a fits file.
Right
now the only way I can see to do this is to rewrite the entire fits
file.

I have tried googling 'add column fits file idl' and other similar
phrases
and all I have found is advice which says I should use READFITS and
FTBADDCOL, however, I don't think those will work in my case because I
have variable length binary tables. I have also asked many of the
local
idl experts and they too don't have any ideas about a good place to
start.
