I am using IDL 6.2 on a linux box (Debian etch). Everything workes
fine except TV and related procedures. When executing

D = BYTSCL(DIST(256)) & TV, D

the IDL Development Enviroment crashes without warning.
Has anyone experienced the same problem?

The problem is not removing the security patch. The problem is when
the next version of libX11 is released. It will have the security
patch built-in. All X applications will use the new version. Any OS
built on that version of libX11 will not be able to run IDL.
