I rolled back the libX11 update, and that fixed my problem.

Many people have reported similar problems recently, which are caused by
recent updates to the X server...most likely when you updated your system.

There is a thread on the rsi website about this:

http://www.ittvis.com/forum/message.asp?fmid=2267

and the last few days of the newsgroup archives have more info.

The workaround would appear to be rolling back the X server updates.

cheers

yes, that works. unfortunately, this libX11 update was supposed to fix
an exploitable security hole. a more permanent and secure solution
would be nice.
