CALL_EXTERNAL and C global variables [message #5379]

Has anyone had success using, with IDL, C code that contains
externally-defined variables? I've been able to create the
shareable objects, and access them using CALL_EXTERNAL. The
problem seems to be that the value of these externally-defined
global variables is forgotten between calls. Does that make
sense? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
