I am using windows xp to run IDL at the remote machine in my dept.
When I try *plot* command it appears

Unable to open X Windows display
Is your DISPLAY environment variable set correctly?

I tried *setenv DISPLAY your-workstation-hostname:0.0* but it does
not work. How to fix it? Thanx.

If I remember correctly, with cygwin, you have to purposely install an
X11 server to get things to work, it is not a default. Xmanager is
free for 30 days and then $99 which is a lot considering there is
another free way to do it:

Download XLiveCD from http://xlivecd.indiana.edu/ and burn it to a CD.
Then when you want an X11 server on your Winox, just pop the CD in the
drive and it will run directly from the drive, without installing
anything on your HD and for free. XLiveCD is based on cygwin, but
works every time for me. I think it even gives you an option of
installing on the HD if you need the CD drive free while working on
IDL.

Hope this helps,

G

You might want to install NXserver on the remote machine and NX client
on the WinXP box. There is a free version available on www.nomachine.com
which handles a maximum of 5 clients. Using NX should solve your
display problems.
