error in reading unformatted fortran files [message #54198]

I've been having a problem when using idl to read unformatted fortran
files. I get the
error:
% READU: Corrupted f77 unformatted file detected. Unit: 1
File: ../models/mod_sphere/tarr2.unf

When I searched on google, I found that there had been some discussion
of this problem in your group
earlier about a year ago. (I'm cci'ng in particular Mark as I see he
had this problem) I was wondering if you've found how to deal with
it? If so, I'd appreciate any advice you have on this,
