I can't give you a definitive answer that everythings OK, but I've had
no problems so far.
I have not run lots of IDL applications, just a few tests which ran
exactly the same under 2.5 as 2.4.
I have IDL version 4.0.1
RSI should be able to supply you with a demo version, or download one
from their ftp site (ftp.rsi.com). Try that before you buy anything.

4.0.1 for Solaris 2 works under 2.5. I haven't exercised it much, but
so far nothing has fallen flat.
Sun would probably consider it a big problem if it didn't work. In
fact, our local technical rep told us that the binary compatibility
for 4.1.X binaries was good enough that Sun was offering a reward to
field engineers who found a 4.1.X program that didn't run under 2.5.
I just tried IDL 4.0.1 for 4.1.X, and _it_ works under 2.5.
