If you have an SGI:

(1) Get totiff from ftp://ftp.sgi.com/graphics/bin/totiff.Z
(2) Convert RGB file to TIFF using 'totiff file.rgb file.tiff'
(3) In IDL, read TIFF file using 'IMAGE=READ_TIFF('file.tiff')

If you don't have an SGI, use xv to convert from RGB to TIFF.
You can get xv from ftp://ftp.cis.upenn.edu/pub/xv/xv-3.10a.tar.gz
Or you could use on of the many image conversion tools like
NetPBM or ImageMagick.

Cheers,
Liam.
