If you have to ask, Fedora 7 probably isn't for you. It is testing a
very new kernel so it will be a while before all the problems are sorted.
Until then you definately need a system with a front panel reset button.
Mine has been used more since I installed F7 than for all the previous
kernels in the past 4 years).
Having said that, most applications that run on FC6 should (eventually)
work on F7. IDL 6.3 is being used on FC6, but the libX11 bug is
problematic since F7 is too new to support a downgrade workaround.
I did try the 6.4 demo, and command-line stuff seems OK, but when I
tried to use graphics the reset button was needed yet again.

These names don't matter..What matters is the kernel (linux - the
brain of the Gnu/Linux OS) and the Gnu C library.
See here: http://www.ittvis.com/idl/platform.asp
If you don't know what linux kernel is, then please see:
http://www.kernel.org/
If you don't know what glibc is, please see:
http://www.gnu.org/software/libc/
Finally, linux is only the kernel. GNU system + Linux kernel makes up
the complete OS.. It is important to know the difference. Please read
this straight from the great man himself..
http://www.gnu.org/gnu/linux-and-gnu.html
Good luck,
nobody

thank you very much.
Now I have known that IDL 6.4 is not being used in Fedora 7 and rhel
5.
It is running successfully on Rhel 4.
