This seems to be a *very* wise decision. I should have mentioned this
right away: after the upgrade from 6.1 to 6.4, we have encountered a
severe (and still unresolved) problem with some older code inherited
from a former member of our group. This program had originally been
written for IDL 5.4. It worked fine with 6.1. But IDL 6.4, upon the
attempt to compile the code, throws up a lot of "Syntax errors" in
lines that I am quite sure are syntactically correct. I still don't
know why this happens, and haven't had time to look deeper into the
problem (or call support) yet.
Best regards

That's what I remembered then, too. But I didn't remember any x-upgrade
on my machine - but obviously there was some and I missed to deny its
installation during the last update.
Due to subtle differences with the format handling and its criticality
for my code I wouldn't want to upgrade right now - I'll do once my
current project is done :).
Best regards,
Ingo

For your info: we had the same problem (also with IDL 6.1) on a box
running Suse Linux 9.3 (xorg-x11-server-6.8.2-30.12). The solution you
describe would have worked (I suppose), but we chose to upgrade to IDL
6.4 instead, which also solved the problem. BTW, this is a known
issue; I remember seeing other posts in this group regarding the
matter.
Cheers,
