When I started, I grabbed the Quick Start book and went
through that. My initial needs were to plot data, so that was
a real nice way to start, and make awesome looking plots.

Definitely get one of the books too (as mentioned in the
other responses).

Cheers,
bob

If you're looking for material on the Web, here's a link to an online
tutorial:
<http://scv.bu.edu/Tutorials/IDL/idl_webtut.html>. You can try to find
similar other stuff by using your favorite Internet search engine with
keywords like "idl tutorial interactive data language".

Or else, get hold of a good book, for example "IDL Programming
Techniques" by David Fanning <www.dfanning.com>, or Liam Gumley's
"Practical IDL Programming" <www.gumley.com>.

Good luck

Yes, I strongly agree! It is easy to learn a language from a project.
If you try to solve the puzzles you encountered, you will be familiar
with the language very soon. On the contrary, you don't need to be
involed in a computer language if you don't need it at all!
(Except that you are desired to study the language itself.)

BTW, if you like to read some Chinese stuff, here is a recommendation,
http://www.ncg.ac.cn/ , its links also redirect you to some forums.
And Mr. Dianwu YAN is also a very nice guy :-)

Best,

Nico
