I don't know of any third-party book on IDL (does anyone else?).

However you can purchase training manuals from RSI.
The appropriate volume would probably be
"Learning IDL - An Interactive Training Course".
I found it quite useful in getting up to speed.
It costs about $35 US. Send email to info@rsinc.com
and they should be able to help you out.
