call_external under Windows 95 [message #5599]

I am attempting to see if call_external works under Windows 95.
I am running IDL 4.0.1. ALthough I can get the precompiled example to run, I
cannot seem to compile this same example under Visual C++. (I attempted to
use the makefile provided by RSI as a so called external project, but with no
luck.) There are precious few instructions provided, mainly just the example
itself, which as I said, does not seem to compile.
Has anyone succeeded in compiling any call_external routine under
Windows 95? If so, would you share some words of wisdom about how to go about
it with me?
