This seems like a simple task that I should know how to do but it's
giving me some trouble.

I have a JPEG file that has the following dimensions: (4,179,90)
I'm having difficulties viewing this with TV and David's TVIMAGE.

IDL> read_jpeg,file,img,/true
IDL> help,img

IMG BYTE = Array[4, 179, 90]

Any suggestions?
