This problem seems to be the result of the X11 changes in 10.5 .
Restoring the 10.4 version of X11 fixes the problem. Its not a pretty
solution, but it did get me back in business.

The DISPLAY issue seems to be a red herring although it does
relate to some of the apparent changes in X11.
