IDL 3.0 was the first version with widgets, so the split
goes as far back as that (IDL 3.0/PV-Wave 2.0). If you
have a lot of "PLOT, data" calls you should be OK. But
I have a feeling there will be just a bit more to it
than that. :-)

Cheers,

David

They actually shared an identical source base, but since about IDL
5.0/PV~Wave 4.0 (???) they've evolved separately. So if it's just
fairly simple number crunching and plots that don't involve widgets
you've a fair chance of the source being good byte for byte. Throw in
any recent developments in syntax or function calls from either product
and you'll have to adjust, and widgets will mean starting from scratch
in all probability.

Robbie,

I switched from PV-Wave on Suns to IDL on Suns and then, finally, to
IDL on Mac OS X. As I recall, there were only a handful of procedures
that required modification, and then only minor. Note however that
the procedures made no use of widgets -- they were mostly dedicated
data analysis/plotting programs (display to X, print to PS/EPS).

PS. Never looked back!

Could anyone please summarise the relative benefits of widgets in IDL
and PV-Wave.

Thank you.
