Ah, well, this from a guy who has pretty much eaten the
same thing for breakfast for the past 40 years. I wouldn't
put much stock in it. :-)

Ah, the paradox of choice. I'm *so* glad I don't use IDEs[*].

I just requested an update to IDL v7.0 from my sysadmins. After reading this thread, I'm
not sure that was such a good idea..... :o)

cheers,

paulv

[*] Not because I think they're bad in and of themselves, just that I've yet to see a
useful one (apart from a regular old command line coupled with a good editor, of course).

Oh, gosh. I dropped the damn thing somewhere and it
disappeared. So I went under the Window menu to find
it again, and it has taken over the whole left side of
my display!

I don't think there is any chance I'm going to get
any work done this morning. :-(

Well, I did something and it popped back in. But then
I took it out again to see what THAT was all about,
and I can't get it in again. What in the world did I
do the first time?

Yikes! I've torn the Command Line off, but now I can't
put it back! I'm afraid this interface tends to remember
your mistakes. :-(

Bob,

Yes, I think a lot of users will want to always be in debug mode. The
"terminate" button (red square) lives in the debug view. We thought
about having just one perspective, but the "IDL" one is nice to have
because it's cleaner. It also, uhh, forces users to think about
perspectives. ;-) That's a good thing!

We imagine that folks will be creating new, custom perspectives that
best suit how they work. Note that if you drag on a view's tab you can
rearrange it relative to the other views or even tear it off into its
own, unattached window.

Thanks.. I'm just starting to get the hang of this eclipse stuff...
It does seem pretty useful overall

I guess you stay in debug mode if you want to do that.

Ok, so when my program crashes I click on "Debug" at the top right of
the screen, go to the run menu, select "Terminate", select "Terminate"
again, click on "IDL" at the top right of the screen, and then I'm
ready to run again?

That seems like a lengthy workaround.. is this the right way to
recompile and run again after crashing your code because of a mistyped
variable name?

I hate to pick at a scab, but I am *certain* there must
be an algorithm behind grabbing GUI elements and moving
them around. Does anyone have any idea what it is? Where
do I grab, and where should I drop to make things happen
in a sensible fashion? I apologize for not being able
to figure this out. But, on the other hand, I use the
TV so infrequently that I have to get my son in here
to set it up for me if I want to watch a movie, so
this kind of thing is not my forte. :-(

Cheers,

David
