This is total BS. You might not care for Eclipse (not Ellipse),
but IDL is NOT unstable.

I disagree. I think is IDL 7 is VERY stable - it just does things a
little different. In fact, most of the problems are Eclipse issues -
not IDL (to be fair).
Now for the first post - are you running in windows? You say it is a
valid path, I know, but are you sure you can point windows explorer
there and see the files? Is this a network path? Have you tried other
paths - say "c:\temp" - just to see if there is something going on
with the folder you want to use? Check to see if there is a
".project" file in the folder and delete it, then retry the new
project.
