Hi All,

I've just installed IDL 7 and am in the process of taking the leap
into the unknown. I've had minimal experience using IDL Projects and
so now I'm trying to set one up to play around with it. I went to
File->New->IDL Project to set up a new one and when I select 'Create
the new project from an existing directory' and select the folder I
want. When I hit the 'Finish' Button and Error Dialog Box appears
without any message. Does anyone know what is wrong? One thing I
noticed is that if I type the folder name a message appears above
saying "The project location is not a valid path". It is a valid path
but it can't find it.

Thanks for your help,
Ryan.

I hear you. What you are saying is I'm already full of
crap, I don't need any more. Is that right? ;-)

BTW, that Paradox of Choice book you recommended was
an interesting one. I found myself lecturing the Inta-Juice
manager the other day, explaining why if he had 10 choices
instead of the 200 or so he had on the menu he would get
more of the over-30 crowd into his store. Why the hell
would I want "wheat-germ" in a strawberry shake!?

Cheers,

David

What do you mean by "NOT from a current directory"? I can't seem to
create a project whether new or already existing.

I don't think anyone likes that hassle but is sometimes inevitable.

Can you make a new IDL project - NOT from a current directory? That
is, in your Workspace?
I was going to suggest the uninstall/re-install strategy next - but
who likes that hassle?

My theory -- for I too am trending towards old-codgerlyness -- is that our brains are
evolutionarily hard-wired to deal with only a certain amount of complexity. In this day
and age, the rate of increase of said complexity in relation to the amount of actual
*useful* information is just too big a number for our minds to grok.

Sort of like our own private 2nd law of thermodynamics as we become increasingly isolated
systems.... um, er... I mean, people.

Thanks for the info, it did help clarify things. I've set up a
workspace folder on the local disk but I still have the same problem
not being able to set up a new project. I really don't know why this
is the case. If I can't figure it out I'm going to uninstall it an
reinstall IDL 7. If this problem persists, should I contact the
people at ITTVIS directly?

The "workspace" is just a folder where (in theory) all of your IDL
projects are going to live. I say "in theory" because it is possible
to create projects that live outside your workspace folder, but
knowledge of those projects is going to remain in the workspace folder
(in the .metadata folder that gets created in your workspace. You
should put this, I think, on a local disk.

You can then easily create a project in your workspace. Once you have
the project folder set up, just right-click the project and choose
the Import selection. You can import (copy) files from wherever you like
into the project folder.

Here is an article that might help explain some things for you:

No. Nothing is listed even if I play with the "Problems view"
settings.

You are preaching to the choir here, but we are not the
target demographic for ITTVIS, obviously.

I've set up a 'workspace' folder on the network drive and switched
workspaces. I then proceeded to open a new project (on a network and
local drive) and got the same error. For curiosity I tried selecting
the 'create a new project in the workspace' radio button and I got the
same error. I also tried setting up a workspace folder on the local
drive and the same thing.

What exactly is the 'Workspace' and why should it be a separate
folder?

guys:
Sure IDL is stable, because I think IDL7.0 (not include Ellipse)
make little advance comparing to IDL6.4. I think that IDL7.0 = IDL6.4
+ Ellipse. As a research pepole, we need more data analysis and
visualization functions.

I know. What's that about!?

I'm getting more and curmudgeonly in my old age. Irritated
the hell out of me though. :-)

Your workspace folder should NOT be the same as your project folder.
In fact, I get an error when I try that. I set up a workspace folder
on a network drive and created a new project from an existing folder
on a network drive - sorry I'm not getting the same errors. Are there
any "problems" in the Problems view?

Yes, I am using Windows. The path I used was a network path but I
tried to save it to put a local folder (C drive) but I get the same
problem. I've tried two different folders on my C drive. I looked
for ".project" files in the first folder but there wasn't any in
there.

There shouldn't be a problem if my Workspace folder is the same as the
project folder right? (It's not, but I'm just curious to prevent any
future mishaps)
Is it possible that my Workspace folder being a network drive is
messing it up?

I am completely new to using Eclipse.

I think there may be semantic or language issues with the OP's first sentence above. With
apologies to the OP if I'm wrong, but I assumed English is not his first language and
interpreted his use of the word "stable" accordingly; i.e. I took it to mean something
like: "the learning curve for the IDL Workbench is going to interrupt my usual work flow."[*]

But, the provisional misstatement should be corrected -- as you did (all guns blazing! For
this newsgroup at least :o) -- for the record. Any blame for the non-intuitivity (is that
a word?) of Eclipse shouldn't be laid at IDL's door.

cheers,

paulv

[*] To say nothing of the generational (decadal? annual?) differences in the definition of
"stable". :o)
