hmm, it seems to be possible to install a patch as user but after
restarting the workbench I get the same updates offered again.
So I am not sure too if it has worked.
But on a multiuser system I would prefer a system-wide upgrade with a
different non X related eclipse update

I think, but am not certain, that individual users can install their own
upgrades to Eclipse. These will be personal, and installed into their own home
area, overriding the default system version. For a system-wide upgrade you do
need to be root (or whichever user installed IDL/Eclipse, but I think it
insists on root).

can't reproduce it. It happens as I tried to load a program into the
workbench doing idlde program.pro
