hmm, it seems to be possible to install a patch as user but after
restarting the workbench I get the same updates offered again.
So I am not sure too if it has worked.

But on a multiuser system I would prefer a system-wide upgrade with a
different non X related eclipse update

cheers

Can you elaborate a bit more on this. I'm not quite sure
what you are reporting. Thanks.

Cheers,

I think, but am not certain, that individual users can install their own
upgrades to Eclipse. These will be personal, and installed into their own home
area, overriding the default system version. For a system-wide upgrade you do
need to be root (or whichever user installed IDL/Eclipse, but I think it
insists on root).

Hi

I recognized a workbench dir on linux in the dialog can easily get
blanks at the end of the dirname. You have to trim yourself the dirname.

Yes you do need root/administrator rights. On linux you don't have write
access as user on the file location of installed programs.

Are administrator rights required to update Eclipse/IDL Workbench on any
platform? I currently run as administrator on my windows machine (which
is the standard configuration for a few more weeks) so I haven't run
into this.

Changes in how US federal civilian IT systems are managed will require
an update mechanism (if provided w/in the application) that can be run
as a standard user. Waivers for applications failing to meet this
criteria will be granted in the short term (even MS office fails at this
right now). Longer term, vendors will have to change their applications
or face issues selling to US Federal agencies.

On a related note, has any .gov users tried running the last few
versions of IDL under the FDCC? Any problems? We're in the early
stages of rolling out FDCC and I will be setting up a machine next month
to test the various applications used by our group (IDL being one).

I've added a couple of articles on this topic to my web
page this morning, collecting the collective wisdom of
this group:

http://www.dfanning.com/workbench/addtoeclipse.html
http://www.dfanning.com/workbench/otherlang.html

As we accumulate experience, I'll be updating the pages.
I recommend you send all your updates here. I'll probably
see them. :-)

Cheers,

David
