Folks,

There are two different Mercator map projections in IDL. One
produces correct results and the other, uh, doesn't. I strongly
recommend against choosing the latter. I have a call into
ITTVIS to try to understand this better, but in the meantime
I have prepared an article that will help you choose wisely:
