Well, for those who are interested by this issue, we have just
resolved the problem for one machine.
My sys admin did an update of java from 5.0.10 to 5.0.14 and an
updgrade to java 6.0.0.

We have tested it, first with java 6 and it worked. And we tried again
with java 5 (updated) and it worked.

We kept testing, on other machines with more basic installs, with java
5.0.14 and java 6.0.0 and it did not worked.

So we are trying to find which packages made it working on this
machine and not on other machines.... Strange things....

by the way I resolved the xprinter error just by setting up the XPPATH
environment variable, but as I expected it did not solve the whole
problem.
