I just upgraded a RHEL5.2 system to IDL7 and am having trouble getting
IDLWAVE to work with the help. I've followed the instructions in the
IDL Tech Tip to install the 6.4 help packages, and copied the old
idl_assistant script into my idl/bin directory. When I try to launch
the help through emacs I get the error: 'Failed binding IDL_ASSISTANT
socket'.

Any ideas?

If this procedure has resulted in a usable help system for others,
then perhaps the problem is that I'm using Emacs 23.0, which I know is
not currently supported by IDLWAVE. In that case, I'll just have to
use the kludge of launching help from the command line.

(Also, a warning to anyone who is trying this, the 'bin/idl_assistant'
that comes with IDL7 is hard linked to 'bin/idl', so blindly copying
and overwriting will profoundly break your installation. Delete the
IDL7 idl_assistant before copying in the 6.4 version.)

Thanks

Yep, IDLWAVE isn't working with the pre-release Emacs 23 yet, due to
some bugs on their part which have just been sorted out. Many are
using this method with Emacs 22 (the current release).
