Marshall Perrin got this working for 10.4, however 10.5 seems to have
broken it (search for Spotlight in this group to the find original
thread).

The approach should be more or less the same (i.e. modifying the
RichText.mdimporter/Contents/Info.plist file) but something has
changed. Any one got this working again?

Stumbled on a ready-made solution quite by chance. This plugin (link
below) was designed to give syntax highlighting of code using
quicklook. To do so, it first has to create a working UTI for IDL --
which this plugin does.

http://code.google.com/p/qlcolorcode/

I didn't bother with the additional files for highlighting etc,
spotlight indexing was enough for me. Install as directed. A manual
import of IDL files [1] followed by a log out/in (or perhaps vice
versa) did the trick.

[1] mdimport `find . -name "*.pro" -print`
will index IDL files in the current directory and all those below.
