At some point, you might check out these websites for IDL code that is
(very) useful. Astronomers/astrophysicists LOVE IDL, so they have
written a bunch of stuff to make your life easier. Some good links...

I never found the books helpful (but thats just me...). The IDL help
menu sucks (except if you have an early version), so here is a link to
a list of all the IDL routines that you can search using your web
browser.

Hit your uni library for the books by Gumley or Fanning.

Failing that, learn by doing and get coding.

I'll second that, and add that Ken Bowman's book is also a very good
introduction. These are all linked from David's web site.
