IMSL, Inc., and Precision Visuals , Inc., Announce Merger
New Company to be Called Visual Numerics, Inc.
HOUSTON, TEXAS, January 5, 1993 -- Houston-based IMSL, Inc., the leading
supplier of application development tools (ADT), composed of advanced numerical
and graphical computing solutions for science, engineering, and business, and
Precision Visuals, Inc., (PVI), of Boulder, Colorado, a dominant supplier of
Visual Data Analysis (VDA) software for both application developers and end
users, today announced the merger of the two companies. The name of the new
company is Visual Numerics, Inc.
Headquartered in Houston, Visual Numerics, Inc., will maintain day-to-day
operations in both Houston and Boulder. All established sales offices in the
U.S., France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Japan will continue to serve and
support an installed base of over 20,000 customer licenses.
"By combining IMSL's unchallenged leadership in numerics and application
development tools with Precision Visuals' pioneering VDA technology, the
management teams, boards of directors and shareowners of both companies had the
vision to create what will undoubtedly be the single most powerful company in
the burgeoning data visualization market," said Carl Machover, president of
Machover Associates Corp., a leading computer graphics consultancy located in
White Plains, NY. "The creation of Visual Numerics is a textbook example of
the ideal corporate marriage -- highly synergistic technologies and
complementary sales forces with little or no redundancies. I believe Visual
Numerics will lead the industry in defining technology that makes data
visualization software available to a broader range of both developers and endusers."
"There isn't a similar package of solutions available from one supplier in the
market. We're blending two heavyweights in their respective fields, and
providing application developers with the ability to obtain virtually all their
numerics, graphics, and visualization needs from one source," said Richard G.
Couch, president and chief executive officer of the new company.
The union of the two companies combines the talents of over 200 employees and
represents sales of $38 million for 1992. Visual Numerics, Inc., is a
privately held corporation. Charles W. Johnson, founder and chairman of the
board of IMSL, Inc., will remain as chairman of Visual Numerics, Inc.
Founded in 1970, IMSL has established itself as a leading developer and
provider of advanced numerical and graphical computing solutions for science,
engineering, and business. Supporting FORTRAN and C applications programming
on more than 50 computing platforms, the company has more than 14,000 licenses
in 65 countries. Products include The IMSL Libraries, the international
standard in FORTRAN mathematical and statistical subroutines, with more than
900 user-callable routines; C/Math/Library, a library of mathematical functions
in C for use in science, engineering, and applied mathematics; C/Stat/Library,
a toolkit of C functions to solve a variety of statistical problems in areas
such as quality control and financial analysis; Exponent Graphics for FORTRAN,
a flexible library of FORTRAN-callable presentation-quality plotting
subroutines designed for scientific and engineering applications; Exponent
Graphics for C, an interactive graphics library of C language subroutines that
provide powerful capabilities for creating high-quality 2D and 3D graphs; and
IMSL/IDL, an interactive scientific computing environment complete with
powerful 2D and 3D graphics, a robust set of mathematical, statistical, image
processing and signal processing functions.
Founded in 1980, Precision Visuals, Inc., provides Visual Data Analysis
solutions to both developers and end-users at major corporations, universities
and government institutions worldwide. VDA is highly interactive software technology
that aids technical professionals using desktop computers in the analysis,
exploration and interpretation of large datasets. First introduced in 1988,
PV-WAVE is the company's flagship VDA product. The PV-WAVE product family
includes PV-WAVE Command Language, a fourth generation programming language for
technical professionals who develop VDA applications, and PV-WAVE Point &
Click, a complete end-user application featuring VDA functionality driven by an
easy-to-use, yet powerful, graphical user interface. With more than 4,000
sites worldwide, PV-WAVE is widely recognized as the leading solution for
customers with VDA requirements, such as test engineering, remote sensing,
signal processing, materials testing, and financial analysis.
