Disclaimer: I work for Tech-X and did some work on mpiDL.

It's the only package available for using MPI (OpenMPI or MPICH)
within IDL that I know of. (It is also packaged with TaskDL, a task
farming solution for IDL.) Of course, it is *possible* to make MPI
calls without mpiDL, but I doubt it would be a cost effective solution
to write your own bindings for the MPI API.
