works just fine (I see an animated brain or alike)
IDL> print,!version
{ x86 Win32 Windows Microsoft Windows 7.0 Oct 25 2007 32 64}
gives me a white window, a "waiting" cursor... if I try to close the
window, IDL crashes.

Ah, I just got back from the eye doctor's. Guess I wasn't
a minute too soon. :-)
Well, the one everyone is complaining about works for me, too.
Although it is not in color.
Don't know what the problem is. I'm running some version of
IDL that is not IDL 7.0.1. 7.0.2, I guess. (Too old to figure
out the new IDL numbering scheme, and all those decimals are
blurry anyway.)
Cheers,
David

Ah! Yes that one works fine for me, too. The as with the op, the one
that doesn't work for me is animation_image_doc.pro (in the same
directory)

No Play button here - just a window with title: "Simple Animation"

Don't see anything, or don't see the animation? I had to
hit the play button to see the animation. The first
frame is dark blue. I suppose it could look like there
is nothing in the window.

FWIW - I don't see the animation either. I tried both your
suggestions, too, David.

Oh, never mind. I found it.
Try going to Windows -> Preferences -> IDL -> Graphics
and set the rendering method from Hardware to Software.
Does that help?

What happens if you set DEVICE, DECOMPOSED=0 before you run
the demo?
Cheers,
David
P.S. Where are you finding this example?
