... and also with IDL 4.0.1 under HP-UX. Strange behaviour! But

IDL> print,exp(alog(w)*[1.,2.,3.])
( 0.923880, -0.382683)( 0.707107, -0.707107)( 0.382683, -0.923880)

does the job.
