emacs idl-shell: problem with setup [message #6236]

I am having trouble setting up the emacs idl-shell. I added the line

(autoload 'idl-shell "~/emacs/idl-shell" "Run IDL as an inferior process" t)

to my .emacs file. When I typed

M-x idl-shell

I got the error message

Cannot open load file: idl.

I changed line 234 of idl-shell.el from

(require 'idl)

to include the complete path to idl

(require '/home/apps2/idl_4.01/idl_4/bin/idl)

I now get the error message

Invalid read syntax: "#"

Does anyone know how to set it up properly?

Even though I have not seen this particular error message, the reason
might be:

idl.el and idl-shell.el are obsolete (they do not work reliably with
Emacs 20). Try the replacement modes idlwave.el and idlwave-shell.el.
