Did you (re)install the latest X server package from http://xquartz.macosforge.org?

This is usually further along than whatever is included with the OS X
updates, which apparently clobber whatever working version of X one
might be happily using at the time.

Hmmm, perusing the apple X11 mailing list suggests there may be
something more involved happening... won't be able to update my own
system until I get home tonight to see if I have the same issues.
