Looking at PrecipMap at:
http://www.dfanning.com/map_tips/precipmap.html

This is probably close to the right thing, what I dont understand is
how to map the image to "polar stereographic map projection" like is
mentioned at the top of the article was done before the article
started. I instead need to map the image from cartesian to polar.

Not really (sorry for the delayed reply, I was on travel)

kind of plot I want to make, but probably bigger bins.
