I have also just had a simular experience with the TVRD to postscript.
Here's what I discovered for a Silicon Graphics 4D/50 running
IRIX 3.3. The WAVE color map is not true 8-bits but mapped from
0 to 203. When an image is read back from the screen (TVRD) the
values are 0 to 203. To get back to true 8-bit a re-mapping must
be done. What an aggravation.
