What exactly are you trying to do?

Usually you simply translate the object you want in the background, er,
back so they are behind the other objects. You can also create 2 models
to place your atoms in. One would contain your background only and you
would set the DEPTH_TEST_DISABLE to 1. The other model containing your
other atoms would always render "in front of" the background model.
