We use IDL for the analysis of brain structure using MR imaging,
which is similar, so yes, I think IDL would be very well suited for
your purposes. It is used extensively in medical imaging, for MR,
SPECT, PET, etc..
I can't help but wonder if you would get good results from having
a MR (magnetic resonance) scan of the injury, as a series of images
thru the region at resolution down to 1mm, and then treat the
series of images as a volume. Just a thought.
